A few days ago I started noticing a bunch of nice free tunes and .zip files floating around so I figured I'd do a repeat of last years boxing day freebie roundup.

Zed Bias might have to add Santa Claus to his long list of pseudonyms. Last year he gave a .zip of about 20 tunes, this year he's back with 23. Swindle x Silkie... Yes !

Here's a release I'm very excited about. I've been a fan of both of these producers for quite some time. Silkie since days when he was a regular on ReactFM, Swindle since I picked up 100 Grime and Dubstep Instrumentals Volume 3. Both men have a jazzy, funky, keyboard driven sound. "Unlimited" is slated for December release. Here's what Butterz had to say about the release in their mailout.

The first dream collaboration on Butterz comes from two producers whose music is clearly rooted in the same influences, but have been going different directions with it until this meeting. Silkie has been smashing the Dubstep scene for years now with two albums on Mala's Deep Medi imprint, including collaborations with Skream and Mizz Beatz. Swindle has been rooted in the Grime scene producing for Chipmunk, Wiley, Ghetto and Footsie, alongside releases on Planet Mu and being a founding member of the Butterz crew.
Swindle & Silkie will play a rare b2b set at FWD>> on the 10th November for the launch of Rinse:17 - Elijah & Skilliam which will be out the 14th November.

October 11 2011 was the official launch night of a new dance called "Geeked". Geeked was very pleased to be able to present The Pure Boom Hi-Fi. Pure Boom is one of my very favorite selectors. I met him through the Dubstep scene in San Diego in early 2009. Here though, by special request of Geeked, he's playing roots steppers dub. Pure Boom is the only selector I know of who actually mixes this type of music, as it's usually played "sound system style" (play the dub, flip over, play the vocal, no beatmatching). Heavy duty mixing chops and super sick selecting and programming skills, combine to make each of his sets a very special occasion.

I've been contemplating starting a new night in San Diego for some time, partly so I can install myself as a resident, but mainly to have a fun party to attend. Much of the fun will be booking DJs who are known for a certain sound or style, and having them play “out of genre” whether it's cool old stuff from their archives, or something new they've been wanting to try out.

Due to a series of circumstances that remain mysterious to me, I have a venue for this coming Sunday the 9th of October, The Kava Lounge in SD. This will be the flagship for my new night which I''m calling “Geeked”. Due to the time and effort they put in to researching music, honing their craft etc., DJs, Musicians, Visual Artists and “Heads” are, well... geeks! It's my belief that their geekiness is a good thing and is to be shared for the betterment of society (or at the very least, the best possible party).

Great sound, a well stocked and expertly staffed bar, and friendly but efficient security all conspire to make The Kava Lounge the perfect place to get geeked.

The flagship edition of Geeked will be held at the Kava Lounge on Sunday October 9th from 9 pm 'til 2 am. 21 and up. $5 Admission. Free Before 10 pm. The Kava Lounge is located at 2812 Kettner Blvd., San Diego, CA

EshOne Going Away Party

Donnie "EshOne" Valdez has been a driving force in San Diego music for a few years now as a DJ, Producer, Promoter, and Blogger. He's also a good friend so I'm a little sad to hear that he's moving back to New Mexico. I wish him the best and I'm sure he'll do well wherever he chooses to live. That being said, he's definitely leaving on a high note. The list of DJs on the night for his going away party at the Kava Lounge includes many of his friends and partners in crime here in SD (many of whom are movers and shakers in their own rights).

Residents Mr. Biggs and Headshake warmed up the night with excellent sets. Austin Speed was about twenty minutes in to his (also excellent) set when he graciously yielded the remainder of his time to the gentleman from Maryland, Joe Nice. Joe was nice enough (pun fully intended) to provide me with a partial list of the dubs that he dropped (see below).

Oh alcohol. Next time, just find the door if you're unhappy, make room for the people waiting outside to get in to the at capacity club, you mugs. Altruism XI

Lisa Ubiquitous started the night called Altruism in March 2010 because, well, I'll let her tell you...

"In December (2009), I was reading an article about the San Diego Food Bank, and it mentioned statistics; the need had risen greatly, and the amount of food it receives is down drastically as well. And I noticed the amount of holiday charity events we had poppin' up - food drives, jacket/blanket/clothing drives, toy drives - which is a wonderful thing, but I came to the realization that we're so altruistic during the holidays, but we largely don't consider it during the rest of the year. But people need to eat all year round, and the economy is obviously hitting many people, because what's apparent statistically is the families that previously donated the food and goods to the food bank are now faced with a need as well.

We go out and party all the time; it's about time we party for a cause on a regular basis! The price is small... a minimum 2 can donation, which will go to the Food Bank, or $5, which benefits various friends/charities/disasters in need of financial assistance.

Each month, I will feature different genres of music. I really want to involve the entire community in this, and provide a forum for up and comers to get a chance to play as well, while exposing some of the regulars that will be to new things they may not have had the chance to hear before. And it's all for 2 good causes."

The holidays are behind us now and Altruism XI is just around the corner. I'm pleased to tell you that I'm on the bill for this one! I'll be setting things off promptly at 9pm with a few classic old school garage tunes along with some Future Garage and UK Funky (including some very special unreleased heat).

Following on at 10pm will be a live P.A. from Hm.t Dm.t. Here's what happened when he came through the studio and special guested on my radio show recently. (Big up Dead//Technology for hosting the set).

Dead Technology is a night thrown by San Diego DJ/Producer/Promoter/Blogger and all around nice guy EshOne. The premise of the night is simple, strictly vinyl and dubplate all night long. Nothing with a start or eject button allowed.

I had to work the evening of Dead Technology 2 and so I missed EshOne's set. Reports were that he smashed it. Here's a partial track list he sent me.

When I arrived Sublmnl Sound System were at the controls and the Kava Lounge was jumpin'. Sublmnl were dropping some good old fashioned filthy dubstep and people were dancing all over the place. I've seen these guys play several times, usually on some combination of vinyl and digital, and I have to say it seemed like they're set just felt better coming off 100% vinyl. Call me crazy but I think it sounded better too. A few of the tunes they dropped were,

During their set Jade motioned toward the reinforcement sub woofers that were brought in by Knight Vision DNB and made the "broken heart" symbol with her hands. Sure enough the subs were off. Knight Vision got them fired back up again and brought them back in just in time for the bass drop of the tune being played. Nice.

Joe Nice was next opening with pop/rnb gems "Neneh Cherry - Buffalo Stance" and
"Rick James - Mary Jane" and then straight on to the dubs. I tried not to trainspot but just to just enjoy myself and dance, but at one point I couldn't restrain myself any farther. I lifted myself up to the very far edge of the DJ booth and shined my flashlight on to one of the dubs. From that point on Joe made an effort to show me the sleeve of every single dub he played and to say the name out loud. Later he provided me a list according to his best recollection.

Joe was his usual animated self behind the decks goofing around, posing etc., but most of all, making the decks, mixer and sound system do his bidding.

P Trick hosted the night speaking on the mic to raise the vibes but never more than necessary. Joe and EshOne spoke on the mic ocasionally as well.

Papa Dread was door/security on the night and did his with his usual professionalism and good humor. The vibes were great inside and stayed that way all night. EshOne has a winner on his hands with this night. I'm looking forward to the third installment.

Monky Interview

Recently I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing one of my favorite artists, Monkey... erm, I mean Monky, (well, you'll see what I mean you read the interview). There are a lot of links here so, make sure and click on some of them if you'd like to learn more about the other artists mentioned. Big ups to Monky and the whole Cardiff Wales massive.

M : I'm changing my name now too, to Monky., not a big change i know, but someone said they'd heard my music but couldn't find me on the internet for months so I thought it'd be a good idea to make myself easier to find init.

P : You and Stagga we're in Optimas Prime making hip hop right ?

M : Yeah man, we were making skratching music originally, then started to work with a few MCs.

P : So, some of those same MCs from the hip hop days are they making grime/dubstep now ?

M : Nahhhh not really, none of those MCs really got into anything other than traditional hip hop sort of stuff which is a shame, but a lot of them are still doing interesting stuff. One exception thought is an MC I've worked with called Ruffstylz, hes into rappin' over all kinds of interesting music and he's got a mad lyrical style and wicked flows that really suit it.

P : I've heard from a few different UK artists, that they started out in hip-hop what got you interested in hip-hop?

M : I got into hip hop mainly through skratching.

P : What was the progression like for you in to making Dubstep ?

M : It was really refreshing to make instrumental stuff that I could finish myself and not have to wait for vocals to go on it. and i didn't have to have MCs in mind when I was makin' the beats, i could just experiment and go into the direction that i wanted to go in.

P : Makes sense.

M : Yeah man, was like when I started makin' beats init.

P : Tell me a little bit about Neuropol, how and it started and who was/is involved in putting it on.

M : A reggae DJ called Truth started it, he runs reggae sound system called Uprising Sound System as well. Nueropol is also closely linked with the main drum and bass promotion in Cardiff called Apeture. It's been a really big catalyst in getting a scene going here cos all the Djs and producers get to link up and play their own tunes and stuff and see what people are feelin' in the dance.

P : I hadn't even thought about reggae in Cardiff. Is there a Jamaican population in Cardiff ?

M : Yeah, in the docks there's always been a big Jamaican community.

P : Yeah that makes sense. I forgot about Cardiff being a port town I guess.

M : Yeah, it's good like that.

P : So, are there a few different reggae sounds ?

M : Yeah, there a few, but they seem to come and go a lot.

P : Is Uprising Sound System a going concern though ?

M : They don't really do it as much now cos it's kind of evolved into Nueropol, they still do the odd show though.

P : So, Truth started Neuropol as a Dubstep night ?

M : Yeah, well as a bass heavy music night, it took a while to catch on, Dubstep generally did in Cardiff.

P : What other genres are present on the Neuropol night ?

M : Jungle, Garage, Funky House, a bit of Hip Hop thrown in maybe it's all about bass though.

P : Is it still like that, with multiple genres, or is it more around Dubstep now ?

M : It's mostly around Dubstep

P : I've noticed a sort of coming together of bass related genres these days, not that the styles are merging but it seems like people are open to nights with bass as the focus rather than particular genre.

M : Yeah, I think Dubstep has opened the borders of dance music a lot in that way.

P : You and Stagga use a lot of reggae vocals in your productions, how has Reggae influenced your music ?

M : Yeah man, I used to DJ Reggae and Dancehall mostly init, we both did.

P : Oh, Okay, that makes sense.

M : Yeah cos it would always be better for the dance than Hip Hop.

P : So were you guys playing Reggae at those early Neuropol nights ?

M : Yeah sometimes, well before it was called Neuropol, but still not that often cos we'd still play a lot of Hip Hop.

P : What were some of your favorite Reggae tunes to play in the dance.

M : Capleton on the BushyBushy Riddim, can't remember the tune, The Danger Zone by Capleton, Ghostface on No No No tune.

P : That's not Ghostface from Wu-Tang ?

M : Yeah man, its good that tune.

P : Nice !

M : I'd have to have a flick thru my tunes to properly remember the good ones.

P : I'd also be interested to know what hip hop tunes were big for you.

M : Okay, well the tunes that I'd play out would be different to what I'd be listening to init. To play out I'd be playing a lot of commercial stuff like Timbaland, Neptunes all that kinda stuff cos it was the only thing that'd go down in the clubs, but I'd be listening to MF DOOM, Madlib, Stones Throw stuff, Necro, Kool Keith stuff like that. That was why Dubstep was such a nice switch over cos I was really into the music that I was playing out.

P : I've heard that the music scene in Wales is known more for bands, it seems like the electronic side of things is a pretty tightly knit community.

M : Well there hasn't really been much of an electronic scene ever in Cardiff, a few producers have done really well like High Contrast and Jean Jaques Smoothie, but I had never really been aware of any kind of scene until now. There was always a strong Hip Hop scene though. There was a night called Higher Learning that was the main night for ages but has stopped running now. Now there a night called Starving Artists, and Flip The Script, and there's also a Secret Was graff battle night that goes on pretty regularly. I'm sure there others that I don't know of. Artist wise, there are loads of people killing it right now, Associated Minds is like a big label Collective from Cardiff all their artists are doing really big things right now, Ruffstylz, Ralph Rip Shit, Squid Ninja's, Metabeats (who's gonna be puttin' stuff out on my label soon too) PLO, Beat Box Fozzy, Mudmouth, Willo. I'm sure they got more. Also Dead Residents have been continuously making sick music, that's Junior Disprol and Chud Jackson, Uncle Retch and a live band. Also Blaktrix is back on it too.

P : Can you tell me a little about the label Sonic Lodge, how it got started etc. I always assumed it was you and Stagga that run it, is that right ?

M : Yeah, it got started with a track I had that was getting a lot of play [from Djs such as N-Type, Hatcha, Walsh, RSD] called Volume VIP. I wanted to try and put it out myself, so I approached a distributor about a P and D deal and that's how it got started. It's just me really and anyone else who wants to get involved, Stagga does help me with it loads.

P : Any plans for the label you'd like to talk about ?

M : Yeah, the next release is Stagga - “Timewarp” and Stagga and Monky - “Glass Bong”, then Magenta - “Planets” and “Forces” and then Meta Beats and Diverse Concepts - “Embossed”, “SandFire “ and also a wicked tune they just done called “Baduka” (if I'm lucky though).

P : Is the Meta Beats and Diverse Concepts record hip hop ?

M : Hip Hop and Dubstep.

P : I wanted to ask you about the BBC 1xtra Wales thing, did you make a mix for them ? (the mix can also be found here)

M : I've done a few diferent things for them. Kaptain and I recently did a mix highlighting music from Cardiff for bbc 1xtra

P : I think I read about that on the Chrome Kids blog.

M : Yeah man, that's the one.

M : Chrome Kids is a blog my mate Kaptain started, then he would get me and Stagga in to help him with mixes and live sets and stuff.

P : I've read that blog.

M : M : Yeah man we still do it, its going strong.

P : They [BBC Wales] asked for a mix with a few Wales artists on it, and you guys made one of all Wales artists
right ?

M : Hahaha yeah man, they said "Do you think you'll be able find enough music from Wales to fill 20 minutes ?" We crammed about 30 tunes into 20 minutes in the end. We also did a promo thing for the new Cardiff e.p which has just come out on Subdepth, that was Stagga, Mr Curtamos and me, giving our top tips of new artists we were feeling and then they played some of our tracks from the e.p. Stagga and I did a few mixes for them last year as well.

P : With all the releases coming out and the recent attention from the BBC, it seems like the scene in Cardiff is really on the verge of blowing up.

M : Yeah, it does seem like its on the verge of something good here, lots of people making good tunes and it's gettin' noticed all over the world now so that's gotta be a good thing.

P : I think peoples minds work geographically.

P : Yeah, they probably do.

P : Like first people were interested in London, Croydon in particular, then Bristol. Do you think Cardiff's gonna be next ?

M : I think some times a scene develops in a place and it seems fresher cos its new, I think Cardiff has a lot to offer in terms of music so we'll have to see init.

P : Any artists you want to tip ?

M : Magenta, Stagga, Ital Lion, MetaBeats, Diverse Concepts, Ill Diddy, Lung, Max Roach, Mr Curtamos, Pdubz, Don Leisure, MASK, CRST.

I'm pleased to announce, Fused Forces will be covering my weekly CybaFM show on Tuesday March 9 at 10 pm gmt (I'm gonna be out of town). For those who don't know, Fused Forces are a two man production and DJ team out of Essex UK. They've got an impressive discography of vinyl and digital releases, as well as a whole slew of really good Dubstep Forum freebies. They are known for their Dubstep and Grime stylings but they assure me they are gonna switch it up a stylistically for this special cover show.
